Summary

Humans exhibit increased ventilation during hyperthermia. This study identified core body temperature thresholds for this ventilatory response, occurring around 38.1-38.5°C, even at rest.

Background:

  • Humans increase ventilation (breathing rate and depth) when body temperature rises (hyperthermia).
  • The specific core body temperature at which this ventilatory increase begins (threshold) and its physiological basis are not well understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if core body temperature thresholds for increased ventilation exist in humans.
  • To investigate the physiological rationale behind the ventilatory response to hyperthermia.

Main Methods:

  • Seven healthy male subjects were immersed in a 41°C bath to induce hyperthermia.
  • Core (tympanic and esophageal) and skin temperatures, ventilation (V1), and oxygen consumption (VO2) were continuously monitored.
  • Ventilation was analyzed in relation to core temperature changes.

  • Core body temperatures reached 38.7°C (tympanic) and 39.0°C (esophageal).
  • Ventilation (V1) increased significantly, with thresholds identified at 38.1°C (tympanic) and 38.5°C (esophageal).

Conclusions:

  • Core body temperature thresholds for increased ventilation (hyperpnea) are demonstrable during passive warming in humans.
  • The observed hyperpnea during hyperthermia is not driven by increased metabolic demand (VO2).
