Self-measurement of bad breath (halitosis) is challenging. While saliva self-scores showed some objectivity, preconceived notions hindered accurate self-assessment of oral malodor.

Background:

  • Bad breath (halitosis) is a common oral condition.
  • Microbial activity in the mouth often causes halitosis.
  • Individuals may be unaware of their own halitosis or falsely perceive it.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the possibility of objective self-measurement of oral malodors.
  • To assess the reliability of self-assessments compared to objective measures.

Main Methods:

  • 52 volunteers performed self-measurements of mouth, tongue, and saliva odor.
  • Results were compared with self-assessments, odor judge scores, and various dental and biochemical parameters.
  • Objective parameters included plaque index, gingival index, probing depth, volatile sulfide levels, salivary cadaverine, and trypsin-like activity.
