Summary

Chronic hypoxia exposure during development caused alligators to hatch later and smaller. Despite lower mass, these animals maintained oxygen consumption when exposed to normal oxygen levels.

Rapidly dividing tumors, embryos, and wounded tissues require more oxygen than usual, lowering the oxygen concentration in the blood.
