Summary

This study shows that using a viable omental pouch is an effective method for splenorrhaphy in saving traumatized spleens. This surgical technique offers a promising autogenous alternative for spleen repair in trauma cases.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of an autogenous viable omental pouch for splenorrhaphy in saving traumatized spleens.
  • To assess the feasibility and outcomes of this technique in animal models.

Main Methods:

  • Mobilization and vascular pedicle clamping of 10 spleens (1 sheep, 9 goats).
  • Induction of AAST grade IV splenic trauma.
  • Application of viable omental pouches with manual pressure for hemostasis.
  • Postoperative monitoring and 6-week harvesting for histological assessment.

  • Successful bleeding control in 8 out of 10 animals.
  • Animals that survived showed recovery within 12-36 hours.
