Background:

  • Understanding color preferences provides insights into human perception and cultural influences.
  • Previous research has indicated potential sex-based variations in color perception and preference.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate and compare favorite color choices between male and female retirees.
  • To identify specific color preferences that differ between sexes within an elderly population.

Main Methods:

  • A survey was administered to 193 retirees to collect data on their favorite colors.
  • Frequency analysis was used to compare color preferences between male and female participants.

Main Results:

  • A significant difference in the pattern of favorite colors was observed as a function of sex.
  • Blue emerged as the most preferred color for both men and women.
  • Women showed a higher preference for black and purple compared to men.
  • Men preferred red over pink, while women reported equal preference for red and pink.

Conclusions:

  • Sex influences color preferences, even in older adults.
  • The observed color preference patterns in retirees closely mirror those found in younger adult populations.
  • These findings contribute to the understanding of color psychology across different age groups and sexes.
