Summary

This study found that time perception differs based on when participants know about the time task. Longer durations were accurately estimated prospectively but underestimated retrospectively.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effect of prospective versus retrospective temporal paradigms on duration estimation.
  • To examine the interaction between temporal paradigm and interval duration.

Main Methods:

  • 12 groups of 18 subjects estimated durations of 6 empty intervals (10-50 sec).
  • Subjects were informed about the time task either before (prospective) or after (retrospective) interval presentation.

Main Results:

  • Shorter intervals (<42 sec) were accurately estimated in both paradigms.
  • Longer intervals were estimated accurately in the prospective paradigm.
  • Longer intervals were underestimated in the retrospective paradigm, consistent with Hicks (1992).

Conclusions:

  • The temporal paradigm significantly interacts with interval duration in time perception.
  • Prospective temporal tasks may yield more accurate estimations for longer durations compared to retrospective tasks.
