Background:

  • Pyomyositis (PM) is a bacterial infection of muscle, often requiring accurate diagnostic imaging.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To define specific imaging criteria for pyomyositis using computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging.
  • To differentiate pyomyositis from other soft-tissue masses through imaging.

  • Review of 27 CT scans and 11 MR images from 32 patients diagnosed with pyomyositis.
  • Blind evaluation of images from 10 pyomyositis patients and 16 patients with soft-tissue masses.

  • CT revealed muscle enlargement with heterogeneous attenuation in all patients, and focal fluid collections in 26.
  • MR imaging showed increased signal intensity in affected muscles and cellulitis in all patients, with focal fluid collections in nine.

Conclusions:

  • Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging provide valuable characterization of imaging findings suspicious for pyomyositis.
  • These imaging modalities can assist clinicians in diagnosing pyomyositis.
