A rare tracheal glomus tumor was successfully removed using Nd-YAG laser treatment in a 65-year-old male. This fifth reported case highlights effective management for this uncommon airway tumor.

Area of Science:

  • Thoracic Surgery
  • Oncology
  • Respiratory Medicine

Background:

  • Glomus tumors are rare neoplasms typically found in the skin or extremities.
  • Tracheal glomus tumors are exceptionally uncommon, with only a few cases documented in medical literature.
  • Patients may present with respiratory symptoms due to airway obstruction.

Observation:

  • A 65-year-old male presented with dyspnea and hemoptysis.
  • A glomus tumor was identified at the posterior wall of the trachea.
  • The tumor was surgically excised using an Nd-YAG laser.

Findings:

  • Complete excision of the tracheal glomus tumor was achieved.
  • No visible recurrence of the tumor was noted one year post-surgery.
  • This represents the fifth reported case of a glomus tumor originating in the trachea.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Nd-YAG laser excision is a viable and effective treatment modality for tracheal glomus tumors.
  • Early diagnosis and surgical intervention can lead to favorable outcomes.
  • Further research into the pathogenesis and optimal management of rare tracheal neoplasms is warranted.
