Area of Science:

  • Infectious Diseases
  • Dermatology
  • Microbiology

Background:

  • Tuberculosis (TB) typically affects the lungs, but extrapulmonary manifestations can occur.
  • Paronychia, an infection around the nail, is rarely caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

Observation:

  • A patient presented with an unusual tuberculosis paronychia and skin infection of the big toe.
  • The condition was complicated by inguinal lymphadenitis and abscess formation.

Findings:

  • Diagnosis was confirmed through pus culture and skin lesion biopsy/histology.
  • The causative agent was identified as Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the importance of considering extrapulmonary TB in returning travelers with unusual skin infections.
