Summary

Uraemia frequently causes peripheral neuropathy and impacts diaphragmatic function. This study found phrenic neuropathy is a common complication in end-stage renal disease patients on dialysis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate phrenic nerve involvement in patients with end-stage renal disease undergoing chronic haemodialysis.
  • To assess the prevalence of phrenic neuropathy as a complication of uraemia.

  • Electrophysiological study of the phrenic nerve.
  • Inclusion of 32 non-diabetic patients with end-stage renal disease on chronic haemodialysis.

  • 17 patients (53%) exhibited electrophysiological signs of peripheral neuropathy.
