Summary

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears are common in patients with knee instability, often occurring with meniscus damage. This study analyzed 150 knees, finding high rates of complete ACL disruption and associated meniscal injuries.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Sports Medicine
  • Knee Biomechanics

Context:

  • Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) disruption is a significant knee injury.
  • Anterolateral rotational instability often accompanies ACL tears.
  • Arthroscopic analysis provides detailed insights into knee pathologies.

Purpose:

  • To evaluate the prevalence of complete and partial anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) disruptions.
  • To assess the incidence of degenerative changes in the femoral condyles.
  • To determine the frequency of meniscal tears in conjunction with ACL injuries.

Summary:

  • Arthroscopic examination of 150 knees revealed complete ACL disruption in 86.6% and partial in 13.4%.
  • Degenerative changes were observed in the medial femoral condyle (52.6%) and lateral femoral condyle (9.3%).
  • Meniscal disruptions were prevalent, with 81.3% of knees showing some form of meniscal tear, including isolated medial (29.3%), isolated lateral (28%), and simultaneous (23.3%) tears.

Impact:

  • Highlights the high association between ACL injuries and meniscal pathology.
  • Provides data on the frequency of associated knee joint damage.
  • Informs clinical assessment and treatment strategies for ACL-injured patients.
