Summary

The latex agglutination test shows variable sensitivity for bacterial meningitis pathogens. While useful in specific cases, it is not recommended for routine use over Gram staining in diagnosing meningitis.

Area of Science:

  • Microbiology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Clinical Diagnostics

Background:

  • Meningitis is a serious infection requiring rapid and accurate diagnosis.
  • Gram staining is a standard diagnostic method for bacterial meningitis.
  • The latex agglutination test offers an alternative or supplementary diagnostic approach.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the diagnostic value of the latex agglutination test for bacterial meningitis.
  • To compare its efficacy against Gram staining, particularly in partially treated cases.
  • To determine the utility of latex agglutination for specific meningitis-causing bacteria.

Main Methods:

  • The study assessed the performance of the latex agglutination test in a cohort of meningitis patients.
  • Sensitivity was determined for infections caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae type b, and Neisseria meningitidis.
  • Results were compared with those obtained from Gram staining.

Main Results:

  • Latex agglutination test sensitivity was 60% for Streptococcus pneumoniae, 93% for Haemophilus influenzae type b, and 39% for Neisseria meningitidis.
  • The test did not demonstrate superior value compared to Gram staining in partially treated meningitis.
  • The test identified specific organisms when Gram staining was inconclusive.

Conclusions:

  • The latex agglutination test has variable sensitivity for common bacterial meningitis pathogens.
  • Routine use of the latex agglutination test is not recommended due to limitations compared to Gram staining.
  • The test may be valuable as an adjunct diagnostic tool when Gram staining is negative or suggests Neisseria meningitidis.
