    Diagnosing bladder outlet obstruction in men is now simpler. A new device directly measures urethral resistance, a key indicator, improving accuracy for benign prostatic hypertrophy patients.

    Background:

    • Benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) commonly causes bladder outlet obstruction (BOO) in men.
    • Accurate urodynamic assessment is crucial for diagnosing BOO severity.

    Observation:

    • Synchronous urinary flow and pressure studies were performed on 51 male subjects (12 normal, 39 with BPH).
    • A novel urodynamic scoring system was developed for objective BOO diagnosis.
    • Minimum urethral resistance emerged as the most significant urodynamic parameter for BOO diagnosis.

    Findings:

    • Traditional determination of minimum urethral resistance involves complex calculations.
    • A new instrument, the Urethroresistance, was developed for direct urethral resistance measurement during micturition.
    • This device simplifies and enhances the accuracy of BOO assessment.

    Implications:

    • The Urethroresistance device offers a more efficient and objective method for diagnosing bladder outlet obstruction.
    • This advancement can improve clinical decision-making and patient management for BPH.
    • Direct measurement of urethral resistance has significant potential in urological diagnostics.
