Background:

Current trends in AIDS care, such as dehospitalization and enhanced outpatient treatment, may increase the risk of unmet needs for daily living assistance among persons with AIDS (PWAs).
Understanding these unmet needs is crucial for developing effective support systems and improving the quality of life for individuals living with AIDS.

Purpose of the Study:

To examine the prevalence and correlates of unmet needs for assistance in six functional domains among persons with AIDS (PWAs).
To identify factors associated with unmet needs to inform clinical care improvements.

Main Methods:

Interviews were conducted with 224 persons with AIDS (PWAs).
Data were collected on unmet needs across personal care, instrumental activities of daily living, social functioning, role performance, health management, and system navigation.
Statistical analyses were performed to identify correlates of unmet needs.

Main Results:

A significant majority (74.1%) of respondents reported partially or completely unmet needs in at least one functional domain.
The highest prevalence of unmet need was observed in instrumental activities of daily living (46.4%).
Unmet need was significantly associated with greater illness severity (more symptoms, hospitalizations), minority status, and characteristics of the support network (proximity, size, type).

Conclusions:

A substantial proportion of persons with AIDS (PWAs) experience unmet needs, particularly in instrumental activities of daily living.
Illness severity, minority status, and support network characteristics are key factors influencing these unmet needs.
Findings underscore the need for integrated care approaches to address the multifaceted needs of PWAs and improve clinical care delivery.
