Area of Science:

  • Gynecology
  • Minimally Invasive Surgery

Background:

  • Abnormal uterine bleeding is a common gynecological issue.
  • Hysterectomy is a frequent treatment, but carries risks and costs.
  • Endometrial ablation/resection offers an alternative treatment modality.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To highlight the effectiveness of endometrial ablation/resection.
  • To emphasize its utility in older and postmenopausal patients.
  • To discuss the safety and cost-effectiveness of the procedure.

Main Methods:

  • Review of current literature and clinical practice.
  • Analysis of complication rates and patient outcomes.
  • Cost-effectiveness evaluation compared to hysterectomy.

Main Results:

  • Endometrial ablation/resection effectively treats abnormal uterine bleeding, potentially avoiding hysterectomy.
  • The procedure is increasingly recognized for its role in older and postmenopausal women.
  • Complications are infrequent and mainly associated with fluid intravasation or surgical inexperience.

Conclusions:

  • Endometrial ablation or resection is a viable, cost-effective alternative to hysterectomy for abnormal uterine bleeding.
  • This treatment should be offered to all suitable patients, particularly the elderly.
  • Further emphasis on surgeon training may minimize rare complications.
