Area of Science:

  • Cardiac Surgery
  • Thoracic Surgery
  • Cardiovascular Research

Background:

  • Aortic valve disease necessitates surgical intervention.
  • The Ross operation utilizes a pulmonary autograft for aortic valve replacement.
  • Patient selection is crucial for successful outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the preliminary outcomes of the Ross operation for aortic valve replacement.
  • To assess the safety and efficacy of pulmonary autograft implantation.
  • To determine the feasibility in a cohort of patients with diverse aortic valve pathologies.

Main Methods:

  • Seven patients underwent aortic valve replacement with a pulmonary autograft (Ross operation).
  • Procedures included subcoronary implantation or total aortic root replacement.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Reconstruction of the right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) was performed using homografts.
  • Main Results:

    • No operative or late mortality was observed.
    • All patients experienced symptomatic improvement, achieving New York Heart Association (NYHA) class I.
    • 100% freedom from reoperation, valve complications, and endocarditis at a mean follow-up of 5.6 months.

    Conclusions:

    • The Ross operation is a viable option for selected patients with aortic valve disease.
    • Pulmonary autograft implantation demonstrates promising short-term safety and efficacy.
    • Further studies are warranted to confirm long-term outcomes.
