Photocoagulation of malignant melanoma

    Summary

    Photocoagulation therapy for suspected choroidal melanoma was attempted in a patient. Post-treatment, pigment accumulation in macrophages mimicked tumor growth, leading to enucleation.

    Background:

    • Histopathologic examination revealed rare neoplastic cells but abundant pigment-laden macrophages and central necrosis.
    • The clinical appearance of tumor growth was attributed to pigment accumulation within macrophages.
    • This finding highlights a potential diagnostic pitfall in evaluating choroidal lesions.

    • Pigment-laden macrophages can mimic tumor progression in choroidal lesions, complicating clinical assessment.
    • Careful histopathologic correlation is essential to differentiate true tumor growth from reactive cellular changes.
