Summary

Diagnosing long-term intravaginal foreign bodies can be challenging. Vaginography, a contrast imaging technique, successfully identified retained foreign bodies in a pediatric case, offering a novel diagnostic approach.

Area of Science:

  • Gynecology
  • Pediatric Medicine
  • Radiology

Background:

  • Intravaginal foreign bodies, especially of long duration, present diagnostic challenges.
  • Conventional diagnostic methods may fail to detect these retained objects.
  • Persistent bloody and malodorous vaginal discharge in children can indicate an underlying issue.

Observation:

  • An 8-year-old girl presented with a 4-year history of bloody, malodorous vaginal discharge.
  • Gynecological evaluations had previously failed to identify the cause.
  • A pinpoint opening was noted above the hymen during examination under analgesia.

Findings:

  • Vaginography, using radio-opaque contrast medium, revealed an intravaginal filling defect.
  • Surgical exploration and incision of the scarred area led to the removal of two foreign bodies: a plastic tube and a cap.

Related Experiment Videos

  • The imaging modality was crucial in pinpointing the location of the long-standing foreign bodies.
  • Implications:

    • Vaginography serves as a valuable alternative diagnostic tool for suspected intravaginal foreign bodies.
    • This technique can aid in diagnosing challenging cases where other modalities are inconclusive.
    • Early and accurate diagnosis through methods like vaginography is essential for pediatric gynecological health.
