    Background:

    • Hypothyroidism is a condition characterized by insufficient thyroid hormone production.
    • Hearing abnormalities are a potential, yet not fully understood, complication of hypothyroidism.
    • Previous research has not clearly defined the audiological profile associated with hypothyroidism.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the prevalence and characteristics of hearing loss in patients with hypothyroidism.
    • To determine the type and severity of hearing impairments in chronic hypothyroidism.
    • To assess the impact of thyroid hormone replacement therapy on hearing function.

    Main Methods:

    • Audiological examinations were performed on 56 patients with latent or clinical hypothyroidism and 18 with acute hypothyroidism.
    • Hearing loss was categorized as conductive, sensorineural, or mixed.
    • Hair cell damage was assessed, and audiograms were analyzed for characteristic patterns.

    Main Results:

    • 45% of patients with chronic hypothyroidism exhibited hearing loss.
    • Sensorineural hearing loss was the most common type, followed by mixed and conductive.
    • Hair cell damage was observed in 13 patients, predominantly mild to moderate.

    Conclusions:

    • Hypothyroidism is associated with a significant incidence of hearing loss, often sensorineural.
    • While no characteristic audiogram was identified, hair cell damage is a contributing factor.
    • Thyroid substitution therapy resulted in slight hearing improvement in 50% of patients.
