Wandering accessory spleen

Summary

A mobile accessory spleen was identified alongside a normal spleen using ultrasound. This wandering spleen showed normal blood flow, leading to a conservative management approach.

Background:

Accessory spleens are congenital anomalies, typically asymptomatic.
Mobile or wandering spleens are rare and can be associated with complications like torsion.
Accurate diagnosis is crucial for appropriate management.

Observation:

A patient presented with an unusually mobile accessory spleen, distinct from a normally located spleen.
Ultrasound and color Doppler imaging were instrumental in diagnosing this rare condition.
The accessory spleen was visualized in various abdominal locations during follow-up.

Findings:

The accessory spleen possessed a long vascular pedicle, maintaining normal splanchnic blood flow.
No signs of torsion or compromised perfusion were detected in the wandering accessory spleen.
The patient opted against surgical intervention.

Implications:

This case highlights the utility of ultrasound in diagnosing mobile accessory spleens.
Conservative management can be appropriate for asymptomatic wandering spleens with preserved perfusion.
Further research into the long-term outcomes of conservative management is warranted.
