Summary

This study examined how pharyngeal size relates to ANB angles and sex in adolescents. Larger ANB angles correlated with smaller hy-apw4 measurements and oropharynx area.

Area of Science:

  • Orthodontics and Dental Anatomy
  • Cephalometric Analysis
  • Airway Morphology

Background:

  • Pharyngeal size is a critical factor in craniofacial development and airway function.
  • The relationship between skeletal relationships (ANB angle) and pharyngeal dimensions requires further investigation.
  • Understanding sex-based differences in pharyngeal morphology is important for clinical applications.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the influence of ANB angle and sex on pharyngeal size.
  • To determine specific cephalometric measurements affected by ANB angle variations.
  • To identify sex-specific differences in pharyngeal dimensions.

Main Methods:

  • Lateral cephalometric head films of 90 subjects (45 males, 45 females) aged 13-15 years were analyzed.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Subjects were grouped based on ANB angle (<1°, 1°-5°, >5°) and sex.
  • Variance analysis was employed to assess the effects of ANB angle and sex on pharyngeal measurements.
  • Main Results:

    • The ANB angle significantly affected hy-apw4 measurements and oropharynx area.
    • Increasing ANB angle was associated with decreased hy-apw4 measurement and oropharynx area.
    • Sex influenced t-ppw and hy-apw2 measurements.

    Conclusions:

    • Pharyngeal size, specifically hy-apw4 and oropharyngeal area, is inversely related to the ANB angle.
    • Sex demonstrates a differential impact on certain pharyngeal measurements (t-ppw, hy-apw2).
    • These findings contribute to understanding craniofacial and airway development in relation to skeletal patterns.
