    Summary

    Angiography revealed most giant-cell bone tumors are hypervascular. This imaging technique effectively assessed tumor extent, especially extraosseous components, and identified associated aneurysmal bone cysts.

    Background:

    • Giant-cell bone tumors (GCBTs) are a diverse group of bone neoplasms.
    • Accurate assessment of vascularity and extent is crucial for treatment planning.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the utility of angiography in characterizing the vascularity and extent of giant-cell bone tumors.
    • To correlate angiographic findings with tumor histology and identify associated conditions.

    Main Methods:

    • Angiography was performed on 48 patients diagnosed with giant-cell bone tumors.
    • Vascularity was categorized as hypervascular, hypo-/moderately vascular, or avascular.
    • Histological data and presence of aneurysmal bone cyst components were analyzed.

    Main Results:

    • 64% of tumors were hypervascular, 25% hypo-/moderately vascular, and 10% avascular.
    • No correlation was found between angiographic findings and histological aggressiveness.
    • Aneurysmal bone cyst component was present in 60% of hypovascular tumors.
    • Hyperemic synovium, mimicking tumors, was observed in 80% of surgically confirmed lesions.

    Conclusions:

    • Angiography is valuable for assessing the extent of giant-cell bone tumors, including extraosseous involvement.
    • Vascular patterns can suggest associated aneurysmal bone cyst components.
    • Angiography aids in differentiating tumor from reactive hyperemic synovium.
