Background:

Interferon-alpha (IFN-alpha) is an established treatment for chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection.
Current treatment regimens achieve complete response rates of only 20-25%.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the efficacy of interferon-alpha (IFN-alpha) retreatment in patients with chronic hepatitis C (HCV).

Main Methods:

Patients with chronic hepatitis C received a second cycle of IFN-alpha treatment.
Response was assessed by alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels and serum HCV-RNA negativity.

Main Results:

Sixty percent of patients responded to IFN-alpha retreatment.
Approximately 40% of retreated patients achieved a sustained complete response, characterized by normalized ALT and undetectable serum HCV-RNA.
