Background:

Observation:

  • Two cases of benign cervical prevertebral soft tissue swelling after traumatic asphyxia were observed.
  • Patients did not report neck pain or tenderness.
  • The swelling resolved spontaneously without intervention.

Findings:

  • Traumatic asphyxia can lead to retropharyngeal soft tissue swelling, detectable on cervical radiography.
  • This swelling is a benign finding and not indicative of cervical spine injury.
  • Absence of other clinical signs of cervical injury is key.

Implications:

  • Radiologists and clinicians should be aware of this potential finding.
  • Misinterpretation of prevertebral soft tissue swelling could lead to unnecessary investigations for spinal injury.
  • Accurate diagnosis prevents unnecessary patient anxiety and medical interventions.
