    Summary

This study reports a rare electrocardiogram (ECG) finding of marked phasic voltage alternation in a patient with spontaneous left-sided pneumothorax. This specific ECG abnormality has been documented in very few cases previously.

    Area of Science:

    • Cardiology
    • Pulmonology
    • Medical Diagnostics

    Background:

    • Spontaneous pneumothorax is a condition where air leaks into the space between the lung and chest wall.
    • Electrocardiogram (ECG) changes can sometimes be associated with thoracic emergencies.
    • Phasic voltage alternation on ECG is a recognized, though uncommon, finding.

    Observation:

    • A patient presented with spontaneous left-sided pneumothorax.
    • Marked phasic voltage alternation was observed on the patient's electrocardiogram.

    Findings:

    • The observed ECG pattern of marked phasic voltage alternation is a rare finding.
    • This specific ECG manifestation has been previously reported in only one other patient with pneumothorax.

    Implications:

    • Highlights the importance of recognizing rare ECG findings in the context of clinical presentation.
    • Suggests that marked phasic voltage alternation may be an under-recognized sign of pneumothorax.
    • May prompt further investigation into the diagnostic utility of this ECG pattern in thoracic conditions.
