Summary

Anaphylactoid reactions to intraperitoneal cisplatin may be linked to high doses and short infusion times. Adjusting the dose and infusion rate can help mitigate these risks in ovarian cancer treatment.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Clinical Pharmacology
  • Toxicology

Background:

  • Intraperitoneal cisplatin is used in recurrent ovarian cancer treatment.
  • Anaphylactoid reactions to cisplatin are known but dose-rate effects are not well-established.

Observation:

  • Three patients undergoing intraperitoneal cisplatin therapy for ovarian cancer experienced anaphylactoid reactions.
  • Reactions included pruritus, edema, and urticaria, with varying severity and response to treatment.

Findings:

  • Five anaphylactoid reactions were observed in three patients.
  • Reactions appeared correlated with a high dose-infusion time ratio, suggesting dose and infusion rate are critical factors.
  • Hyperthermia did not appear to be associated with the increased reactions.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • A high dose of intraperitoneal cisplatin combined with a short infusion time increases the risk of anaphylactoid reactions.
  • Careful consideration of cisplatin dosage and infusion rate is crucial for patient safety.
  • Further research may be warranted to optimize cisplatin administration protocols.
