Summary

Exercise causes slight ventilation/blood flow (VA/Q) mismatch in horses, similar to humans. This study investigated VA/Q relationships in Thoroughbreds during exercise using the multiple inert gas elimination technique (MIGET).

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate exercise-induced VA/Q mismatch in Thoroughbred horses.
  • To compare VA/Q relationships during walking and galloping.

  • Studied 6 Thoroughbreds under various inspired gas conditions during rest and exercise.
