Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Psychiatry
  • Clinical Psychology

Background:

  • Conversion disorder, a neurological and psychiatric condition, presents with motor or sensory deficits.
  • Understanding long-term outcomes is crucial for patient management and treatment strategies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the long-term prognosis of conversion disorder patients.
  • To identify factors associated with favorable or unfavorable outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 56 patients admitted for conversion disorder (excluding pseudoseizures) was interviewed.
  • Follow-up assessments were conducted, with a median interval of 4.5 years.

Main Results:

  • Patients who improved during their hospital stay had a 96% good outcome, compared to 30% for others (Risk Ratio 3.2).

Related Experiment Videos

  • Rapid improvement was associated with recent symptom onset.
  • A small percentage (4%) developed subsequent organic deficits.
  • Conclusions:

    • Hospitalization and rapid improvement are positive prognostic indicators for conversion disorder.
    • Recent symptom onset may predict a better recovery trajectory.
    • Ongoing monitoring is advised due to the potential for later organic deficits.
