Summary

This study found that the Frankfurt Complaint Questionnaire (FBF) has limited ability to distinguish schizophrenia from alcoholism. New scales, FBF-S and FBF-A, improve diagnostic discrimination for these conditions.

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Clinical Psychology
  • Addiction Medicine

Background:

  • Subjective basic symptoms are key in understanding schizophrenia and substance abuse.
  • The Frankfurt Complaint Questionnaire (FBF) is used to assess these symptoms.
  • Differentiating symptoms between schizophrenia and alcoholism can be challenging.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the utility of the FBF in differentiating schizophrenia and alcoholism.
  • To develop improved measures for basic symptoms in dual diagnosis patients.
  • To re-evaluate the model of basic disturbances in psychiatric disorders.

Main Methods:

  • A study involving 242 psychiatric inpatients: 74 with dual diagnosis, 81 with schizophrenia, and 87 with alcoholism.
  • Utilized the Frankfurt Complaint Questionnaire (FBF) for symptom assessment.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Developed and validated two new scales, FBF-S (schizophrenia-specific) and FBF-A (alcoholism-specific).
  • Main Results:

    • The general FBF scores did not significantly differ between the three groups.
    • FBF statements were found to be partly typical for schizophrenia and partly for alcoholism.
    • The new FBF-S and FBF-A scales demonstrated higher scores in their respective target patient groups, showing diagnostic validity.

    Conclusions:

    • The FBF's diagnostic discrimination capacity for schizophrenia and alcoholism can be enhanced.
    • The development of FBF-S and FBF-A provides more specific symptom assessment.
    • The findings suggest a need to re-evaluate the conceptual model of basic disturbances in psychiatric and substance use disorders.
