Summary

Linear calcifications were observed along the paths of implanted depth electrodes in two epilepsy patients. This previously unreported finding suggests a potential long-term effect of electrode placement.

Background:

  • Medically intractable complex partial seizures (CPS) often necessitate surgical intervention.
  • Depth electrode implantation is a key diagnostic step in epilepsy surgery workup.
  • Previous brain computed tomography (CT) scans were normal, ruling out pre-existing abnormalities.

Observation:

  • Two patients developed linear calcifications (1-2 cm) in the occipital lobes.
  • These calcifications precisely followed the trajectories of previously implanted temporal depth electrodes.
  • The calcifications remained stable over 2-2.5 years of follow-up without new pathology.

Findings:

  • This is the first reported instance of intracerebral calcifications after depth electrode implantation.
