    Summary

The collar button-shaped ulcer, a radiographic sign of gastrointestinal inflammation, results from mucosal ulceration with submucosal extension. This finding is often linked to ulcerative colitis but can occur in various ulcerating GI diseases.

    Area of Science:

    • Gastroenterology
    • Radiology
    • Pathology

    Background:

    • The collar button-shaped ulcer is a specific radiographic finding in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract.
    • This morphology indicates inflammatory processes within the GI wall.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To describe the radiographic characteristics of the collar button-shaped ulcer.
    • To elucidate its association with different inflammatory GI diseases.

    Main Methods:

    • Radiographic analysis of GI tract imaging.
    • Correlation of imaging findings with clinical and pathological diagnoses.

    Main Results:

    • The collar button-shaped ulcer is characterized by mucosal ulceration with submucosal extension, limited by the muscle wall.
    • It is commonly observed in ulcerative colitis, particularly in advanced acute stages.
    • This ulcer morphology can also be present in other ulcerating inflammatory conditions of the GI tract.
    • In transmural diseases, it may appear as a localized and transient feature.

    Conclusions:

    • The collar button-shaped ulcer is a distinctive sign of GI inflammatory disease.
    • Its presence suggests underlying mucosal ulceration with submucosal involvement.
    • While frequently associated with ulcerative colitis, it is not exclusive to this condition.
