Background:

Wernicke's encephalopathy (WE) is a neurological disorder.
Understanding the vascular pathology of WE is crucial for diagnosis and treatment.

Observation:

Autopsy analysis of three Wernicke's encephalopathy cases.
Detailed examination of lesions in the medulla oblongata and lateral ventricular wall.
Morphometric measurement of capillary diameter in the medulla oblongata.

Findings:

Dilatation and endothelial swelling of vessels (arteries to veins) observed.
Fibrinoid degeneration and hemorrhage primarily affected arterioles and capillaries.
Significantly increased capillary diameter in WE cases compared to controls.
Vascular changes were deemed essential lesions, not secondary to parenchymal damage.
