Summary

The new muscle relaxant 51W89 besylate offers acceptable intubating conditions at a dose of 0.15 mg.kg-1. This non-depolarizing agent may be a safer alternative to atracurium, showing reduced histamine release.

Background:

  • Atracurium is a widely used non-depolarizing muscle relaxant.
  • 51W89 besylate is a single stereo-isomer of atracurium.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the efficacy of 51W89 besylate for intubating conditions.
  • To compare 51W89 besylate with atracurium regarding safety and efficacy.

Main Methods:

  • Patients received varying doses of 51W89 besylate or atracurium during nitrous oxide-propofol-isoflurane anesthesia.
  • Intubating conditions were evaluated at specific time points post-administration.

Main Results:

  • Acceptable intubating conditions were achieved in 90% of patients with 0.15 mg.kg-1 of 51W89 besylate at 2 minutes.
  • 51W89 besylate showed no clinical evidence of histamine release, unlike atracurium which caused flushing in 2/19 patients.
