Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Trichomoniasis is a prevalent sexually transmitted infection (STI) primarily affecting women.
  • The clinical significance and morbidity associated with Trichomonas vaginalis infection in men are not well-established.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence and clinical presentation of Trichomonas vaginalis infection in sexually active men.
  • To assess the association between Trichomonas vaginalis and urethritis in men.

Main Methods:

  • The study involved case-control and natural history data from men at risk for STIs.
  • Prevalence of Trichomonas vaginalis was determined in a cohort of 447 men.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Trichomonas vaginalis was identified in 11% of the 447 men studied.
  • Urethral discharge, often mild to moderate, was reported by 54% of infected men.
  • Eradication of Trichomonas vaginalis correlated with the resolution of urethritis.
  • Conclusions:

    • Trichomonas vaginalis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of sexually active men presenting with urethral symptoms.
    • The presence of inflammation or urethral symptoms in men, even with minimal discharge, warrants consideration for Trichomonas vaginalis testing.
