Area of Science:

  • Epidemiology
  • Public Health
  • Nutritional Science

Background:

  • Pilot study for the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC).
  • Assessed a modified Baecke questionnaire for physical activity.
  • Included 134 men and women aged 20-70 years.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Evaluate the repeatability of the modified Baecke questionnaire.
  • Determine the relative validity of the questionnaire against activity diaries.
  • Assess the questionnaire's performance in men and women.

Main Methods:

  • Repeatability assessed using Pearson's correlation coefficients and percentage agreement in tertiles.
  • Relative validity compared questionnaire data to a four-time repeated 3-day activity diary.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Analyses conducted at baseline, 5 months, and 11 months.
  • Main Results:

    • Good repeatability observed with test-retest correlation coefficients ranging from 0.65 to 0.89.
    • Relative validity correlations were 0.56 for men and 0.44 for women.
    • Agreement beyond chance was higher in men (57-56%) than women (41-46%) for repeatability.

    Conclusions:

    • The modified Baecke questionnaire demonstrates good repeatability and moderate relative validity.
    • The physical activity questionnaire is more valid in men compared to women.
    • Findings are consistent with values reported in similar validation studies.
