Summary

Asthma developing after respiratory infections, termed infectious asthma, is common. Patients with infectious asthma show worse lung function despite shorter symptom duration, warranting further investigation.

Background:

  • Respiratory infections like bronchitis and pneumonia are frequently reported by patients as preceding the onset of asthma.
  • These infections are epidemiologic correlates of asthma in both pediatric and adult populations.
  • Evidence suggests respiratory infections may play a role in asthma initiation, beyond their known role in exacerbations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the influence of a history of infectious asthma on the clinical and pulmonary function characteristics of patients with chronic asthma.

Main Methods:

  • A clinical descriptive study was conducted in a community-based primary care practice.
  • The study included 92 middle-class patients diagnosed with chronic asthma.
  • Baseline pulmonary function test results were analyzed for all participants.

Main Results:

  • Infectious asthma was identified in 45% of the patients.
  • Patients with infectious asthma reported significantly shorter symptom duration (5.6 years) compared to other asthma types (13.3 years).
  • Despite shorter duration, infectious asthma patients exhibited significantly worse pre- and post-bronchodilator FEV1 and FEF25%-75%.

  • Patients with infectious asthma demonstrate poorer pulmonary function compared to other asthma syndromes, even with less time experiencing symptoms.
  • Further research into the etiology and prognosis of infectious asthma is recommended.
