This case study highlights a rare presentation of hairy cell leukemia in a young adult male. Despite initial symptoms and high white blood cell count, further analysis ruled out the variant form of the disease.

  • Peripheral blood and bone marrow smears showed characteristic hairy cells, positive for tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase.

Findings:

  • The patient's presentation with a high white blood cell count is atypical for classic hairy cell leukemia.
  • Surface marker analysis and electron microscopy excluded the hairy cell leukemia variant.
