Summary

Carotid duplex ultrasound accurately diagnoses common carotid artery occlusion (CCAO). Patients with isolated CCAO may experience better outcomes than those with CCAO, highlighting the diagnostic value of this imaging technique.

Background:

Common carotid artery occlusion (CCAO) is a rare condition.
Accurate diagnosis is crucial for patient management and outcome prediction.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the efficacy of carotid duplex ultrasound in diagnosing CCAO.
To characterize the clinical presentation and risk factors associated with CCAO.

Main Methods:

Retrospective review of 5400 carotid duplex ultrasonograms over 7 years.
Analysis of medical records for diagnosed CCAO cases.
Confirmation of CCAO in select cases via cerebral angiography.

Main Results:

Thirteen cases (0.24%) of CCAO were identified.
