Summary

Radiographic sinus opacification alone does not confirm sinusitis. Neutrophils in nasal secretions, combined with X-rays, accurately indicate acute sinusitis, showing a strong correlation with CT scans.

Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Radiology
  • Infectious Disease

Background:

  • Radiographic sinus opacification without symptoms is insufficient for diagnosing sinusitis.
  • Previous studies noted high prevalence of clinical/radiographic sinusitis signs and nasal neutrophils.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify clinical signs and symptoms most indicative of acute sinusitis.
  • To evaluate the relationship between specific symptoms, nasal neutrophils, and CT scan findings.

Main Methods:

  • Compared clinical signs (cough, headache) and bacteriological cultures with sinusal CT scans.
  • Assessed neutrophils in nasal secretions and radiographic (Rx) findings against CT scan results.

Main Results:

  • No significant relationship found between cough, headache, or bacteriological cultures and CT scan findings.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Neutrophils in nasal secretions and X-rays showed a strong correlation with CT scan results (77% sensitivity, 100% specificity).
  • Conclusions:

    • Clinical symptoms like cough and headache are unreliable indicators of acute sinusitis.
    • Neutrophil presence in nasal secretions, alongside radiographic evidence, is a highly specific indicator for acute sinusitis, correlating well with CT scans.
