Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the establishment and outcomes of Genito-Urinary Medicine outreach clinics for female prostitutes in Edinburgh.
  • To assess the prevalence of STIs and HIV serostatus within this population.

Main Methods:

  • Outreach clinics were established in two drop-in centers for female prostitutes.
  • Medical care and STD screening were provided to 242 women.
  • HIV serostatus was assessed through testing and review of existing records.

Main Results:

  • Of 160 women screened for STIs, one case of gonorrhea, 11 of chlamydia, 11 of genital warts, and 2 of recurrent genital herpes were detected.
  • One new HIV-positive case was identified among 115 tested women; 8 were previously known positive.
  • 42 pregnancies were recorded, with some linked to client contact.

Conclusions:

  • The prevalence of STIs and HIV among female prostitutes in Edinburgh appears low, indicating high condom usage.
  • High condom usage, while reducing STI transmission, is associated with a significant number of unintended pregnancies.
  • Female prostitutes in Edinburgh do not seem to be a major hub for HIV dissemination.
