Area of Science:

  • Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Surgical Gastroenterology

Background:

  • Cholecystectomy is a common non-gynecological surgery in pregnant women.
  • Pregnancy was previously considered a contraindication for laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) due to concerns about CO2 pneumoperitoneum effects on the fetus.

Observation:

  • Two pregnant patients underwent LC during the second trimester without cholangiograms.
  • The study included 451 LC patients between September 1990 and December 1993.

Findings:

  • LC was successful in both pregnant patients.
  • Both patients experienced uncomplicated term deliveries, indicating safety.

Implications:

  • Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) is a safe procedure for pregnant women.
