Summary

Breast conservation surgery combined with tamoxifen is safe for early-stage (T1) breast cancer in elderly patients. However, larger tumors (T2,3) show a significantly higher risk of local relapse with this approach.

Background:

  • Breast conservation surgery (BCS) necessitates post-operative radiotherapy for local control comparable to mastectomy.
  • Adjuvant systemic therapy is standard for early breast cancer post-BCS.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate local relapse-free rates in early breast cancer patients treated with BCS and adjuvant therapy.
  • To assess the safety and efficacy of BCS with tamoxifen only in elderly/frail patients with early breast cancer.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 335 early breast cancer patients receiving BCS, radiotherapy, and systemic therapy.
  • Comparison with 49 elderly/frail patients receiving BCS and tamoxifen only for standard risk features.
