Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Radiology
  • Trauma Surgery

Background:

  • Delayed posttraumatic hemorrhage (DPTH) is an under-recognized cause of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH).
  • Previous studies on DPTH predate widespread CT scanner use.
  • This study focuses on clinical characteristics and CT findings of DPTH.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the clinical characteristics and CT findings of delayed posttraumatic hemorrhage (DPTH).
  • To evaluate the frequency and outcomes of DPTH as a cause of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH).

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective evaluation of 10 patients with CT-proven DPTH from a cohort of 216 ICH patients.
  • Analysis of clinical data and CT scans, including initial scans within 6 hours post-injury.
  • Cerebral angiography was performed to rule out vascular abnormalities.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • DPTH was the fourth most frequent cause of ICH in the studied population.
  • The symptom-free interval ranged from 1 to 15 days post-head injury.
  • Hematomas were typically deep-seated, small to medium in size, with a good clinical outcome and no mortality or recurrence.

Conclusions:

  • DPTH is a significant cause of ICH in young adults.
  • Injury severity does not correlate with DPTH occurrence.
  • Deep hemispheric location and favorable outcomes are linked to younger patient age and absence of complications.
