Summary

This study analyzed 69 primary pulmonary non-Hodgkin's lymphomas, finding most were low-grade MALT lymphomas. These lymphomas, characterized by nodules and lymphoepithelial lesions, show potential for long-term survival with conservative treatment.

Area of Science:

  • Pulmonary pathology
  • Hematopathology
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Primary pulmonary non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NHL) are rare neoplasms.
  • Understanding their pathological features is crucial for diagnosis and treatment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To retrospectively analyze the pathological characteristics of 69 primary pulmonary NHL cases.
  • To correlate pathological findings with clinical outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 69 primary pulmonary NHL cases.
  • Pathological examination of tumor morphology, including MALT lymphoma features.
  • Correlation with available clinical data.

Main Results:

  • 61 (88%) low-grade and 8 (12%) high-grade lymphomas identified.

Related Experiment Videos

  • 54 low-grade lymphomas were MALT lymphomas with lymphoepithelial lesions.
  • Tumors showed nodular growth with lymphangitic patterns; pleural/vascular invasion did not impact survival.
  • Granulomas present in 20% of cases.
  • High-grade tumors included centroblastic and B-cell lymphomas; 4 cases showed progression from low-grade MALT lymphoma.
  • Conclusions:

    • Pulmonary MALT lymphomas are the predominant type of primary pulmonary NHL.
    • Low-grade lymphomas, particularly MALT lymphomas, exhibit slow progression and favorable survival.
    • Limited surgery or conservative chemotherapy may be effective for these indolent neoplasms.
    • Development of non-invasive diagnostic methods is needed.
