Summary

Bright light therapy may benefit a subgroup of major depression patients without seasonal affective disorder (SAD). This therapy showed increased parasympathetic cardiac function in responders, unlike non-responders or controls.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effects of bright light therapy on cardiac autonomic function in patients with major depression not meeting SAD criteria.
  • To identify potential physiological markers differentiating responders from non-responders to light therapy.

Main Methods:

  • 30 inpatients with major depression (non-SAD) received bright light therapy with antidepressants (doxepin or amitripytyline) for 14 days, followed by dim light.
  • Heart rate (HR) variability and spectral analysis were used to assess cardiac autonomic function before and after light exposure.
