Summary

Partial cystectomy is a viable treatment for select muscle-invasive bladder cancer patients, offering good bladder capacity and 80.1% 5-year survival. This bladder cancer surgery avoids adjuvant therapy.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Surgical Oncology

Background:

  • Muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) requires effective treatment strategies.
  • Partial cystectomy is a less invasive option for specific MIBC cases.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the outcomes of partial cystectomy in patients with localized MIBC.
  • To assess survival rates, complications, and functional outcomes after partial cystectomy.

Main Methods:

  • Thirty-two patients with MIBC underwent partial cystectomy and bilateral pelvic lymphadenectomy.
  • Eligibility criteria included single, upper-half bladder tumors; exclusion criteria involved multicentric disease or carcinoma-in-situ.
  • Tumor characteristics, pathological staging, and surgical outcomes were analyzed.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • The study included patients with transitional cell carcinoma (20) and adenocarcinoma (12).
  • Pathological stages ranged from B1 (T2) to C (T3B); no patients had positive lymph nodes.
  • Overall 5-year actuarial survival was 80.1%, with adequate bladder capacity and minimal complications post-surgery.

Conclusions:

  • Partial cystectomy is a safe and effective treatment for carefully selected MIBC patients.
  • The procedure yields favorable oncological and functional outcomes without adjuvant therapy.
  • This approach preserves bladder function and achieves high long-term survival rates.
