Persistent vertigo after stapedotomy surgery can significantly impact quality of life. High-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) of the temporal bone is recommended for diagnosing complications and guiding revision surgery.

Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Neurosurgery

Background:

  • Stapedotomy is a surgical procedure for otosclerosis.
  • Postoperative vertigo is a potential complication.

Observation:

  • 162 patients undergoing stapedotomy were evaluated for vertigo.
  • 28 patients experienced dizziness, with 12 having persistent vertigo impacting daily life.

Findings:

  • High-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) of the temporal bone proved most effective in diagnosing causes of persistent vertigo.
  • Identified causes included perilymphatic fistula, prosthesis malposition, new otosclerosis, and cicatrices.
  • 10 of 12 patients with persistent vertigo required revision surgery.

Implications:

  • Revision surgery is often justified for persistent vertigo following stapedotomy.

Related Experiment Videos

  • HRCT is a crucial diagnostic tool for identifying surgical complications.
  • Early and accurate diagnosis can improve patient outcomes and quality of life.
