Multiple myeloma. A differential consideration for osteolysis surrounding total hip arthroplasties

Abstract:
A diagnosis of multiple myeloma was made in a 77-year-old man based on the presence of focal periprosthetic osteolytic lesions surrounding a noncemented femoral component. The radiographic appearance of these lesions was remarkably similar to that of focal osteolytic lesions seen around stable prosthetic femoral components resulting from the localized accumulation of particulate debris. Multiple myeloma should be included in the differential diagnosis of osteolytic lesions around prosthetic components.
