Summary

Extracapsular cataract surgery using capsulorhexis and viscoexpression demonstrated high success rates. Viscoexpression is safe for all cataract densities when capsulorhexis exceeds 5 mm, aiding transition to phacoemulsification.

Background:

Cataract surgery is a common procedure to restore vision.
Developing efficient and safe surgical techniques is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the efficacy and safety of capsulorhexis and viscoexpression in extracapsular cataract surgery.
To determine the optimal conditions for using viscoexpression.

Main Methods:

Two hundred consecutive patients underwent extracapsular cataract surgery.
Techniques included capsulorhexis and viscoexpression.
Complications were recorded.

Main Results:

Capsulorhexis success rate was 87.7% (195 eyes).
Viscoexpression success rate was 87.7% (162 cases).

Complications included zonule rupture (5), posterior capsule rupture (1), and vitreous loss (2).

Conclusions:

Viscoexpression is effective for nucleus delivery in cataract surgery.
When capsulorhexis is >5 mm, viscoexpression is safe for all cataract densities.
This technique serves as an ideal transition to phacoemulsification.
