Summary

Extracapsular cataract surgery using capsulorhexis and viscoexpression demonstrated high success rates. Viscoexpression is safe for all cataract densities when capsulorhexis exceeds 5 mm, aiding transition to phacoemulsification.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Surgical Techniques

Background:

  • Cataract surgery is a common procedure to restore vision.
  • Developing efficient and safe surgical techniques is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of capsulorhexis and viscoexpression in extracapsular cataract surgery.
  • To determine the optimal conditions for using viscoexpression.

Main Methods:

  • Two hundred consecutive patients underwent extracapsular cataract surgery.
  • Techniques included capsulorhexis and viscoexpression.
  • Complications were recorded.

Main Results:

  • Capsulorhexis success rate was 87.7% (195 eyes).
  • Viscoexpression success rate was 87.7% (162 cases).

Related Experiment Videos

  • Complications included zonule rupture (5), posterior capsule rupture (1), and vitreous loss (2).
  • Conclusions:

    • Viscoexpression is effective for nucleus delivery in cataract surgery.
    • When capsulorhexis is >5 mm, viscoexpression is safe for all cataract densities.
    • This technique serves as an ideal transition to phacoemulsification.
