Area of Science:

  • Hematology
  • Oncology
  • Oral Medicine

Context:

  • Hematologic malignancies frequently present with oral mucosal lesions.
  • These lesions can arise from direct malignant cell infiltration, bone marrow suppression, or oncologic treatments.
  • Understanding lesion etiology is crucial for patient management.

Purpose:

  • To describe and illustrate the various types of oral mucosal lesions found in patients with hematologic malignancies.
  • To highlight the importance of early diagnosis and treatment in reducing patient morbidity and mortality.

Summary:

  • Oral mucosal lesions in hematologic malignancy patients are classified into primary (malignant cell infiltration), secondary (bone marrow suppression), and tertiary (treatment-related) types.
  • This article provides a descriptive and illustrative overview of these lesion categories.
  • Prompt identification and management are key to improving patient prognoses.

Impact:

  • Facilitates accurate diagnosis and classification of oral mucosal lesions in immunocompromised patients.
  • Aids clinicians in developing targeted therapeutic strategies for better patient outcomes.
  • Contributes to reducing the significant morbidity and mortality associated with these conditions.
